High Altitude Tips
Special precautions for our unique environment -- Our "rare
air" means that the sun is much more intense, so use
sun block even on cloudy days to avoid unwanted burns. It
is also a good idea to wear sunglasses or goggles as well
to avoid snow-blindness. Temperatures and conditions can change
drastically and quickly in the mountains, so always be prepared
with extra layers of clothing that you can add or subtract
as needed. Since the humidity is low, you'll lose more body
moisture from deeper breathing and increased perspiration.
Keep your body hydrated by drinking two to three times your
normal intake of water and juices. Go easy on alcohol and
caffeinated beverages as they are dehydrating. Alcohol is
felt more intensely at this altitude so be aware of your consumption.
Winter Driving Tips
- Slow down in winter conditions - allow extra time to arrive
at your destination.
- Maintain traction by starting and stopping slowly. Drive
at steady speeds, avoiding sudden starts or stops.
- Anticipate turns and lane changes.
- Gently pump brakes to stop.
- Allow extra stopping distance - do not tailgate.
- Don't use cruise control in slippery conditions.
- For winter road conditions call (303) 639-1111 or watch
local channel 19.
- Car Tires - for driving in winter conditions
- A big factor in the safety of your vehicle is the quality
and type of tires you have on you vehicle.
- Tire purchases should be based on the worst driving condition
you expect to encounter - which during the winter months
in Minturn will include snow.
- It is recommended that the tread depth for driving on
snow should be three-sixteenths of an inch.
